Thank you Xpresso Book Tours for letting my blog be a tour stop today for this amazing crime thriller.
If I had a penny for each time I fell in love with a crime thriller I could have had all my books bound in gold by now. With perhaps a diamond rose bookmark each…..just to make it fancy.
I would be doing the story a big injustice if I don’t start with that.
So once more for good measure
From the get go, the suspense and shock that abounds in ‘The Fog‘ glues you to the edge of your seat.
The curtains open on a man haunted by his nightmares. We get to see snatches of his disturbing past.
Just as we start feeling bad for him, the horrifying truth of how he has chosen to deal with his demons is revealed.
And it seems like he might just get away with it but for our hero who gets him caught. This man commits our hero’s name to his memory and you automatically know he is not going to forget the name till his last breath.
We move ahead in time and the focus shifts to another man haunted by his nightmares.
This is our hero, Wesley Cross or Wes, a 36 year old ex marine, ballistics expert who owns his own gun manufacturing buisness in the small southern town of Berry Springs.
(Coincidentally, I had just started watching the NCIS tv series when this book happened and the hero being ex-marine endeared him more to me. Aah…I love bookish coincidences! For the uninitiated, NCIS stands for Naval Criminal Investigate Services and it is an extremely interesting series I am watching on Amazon Prime.)
Wes is handsome, rich, successful, has more female attention than he can handle, avoids relationships and commitments like the plague and….
Wesley Cross is being framed for murder.
Wes’ former lover has been found brutally murdered in his basement, with no clue pointing to anyone else who might have been in Wes’ house( his 3000 sq. feet house in the middle of wilderness) at the time of the crime.
The murder investigation is at a dead end as there are hardly any clues and the autopsy has turned up something extremely strange which has all the investigators stumped.
Wes knows he has to call in an expert to prove himself innocent.
This is where our heroine steps in- Gwyneth Reece or Gwen, a 27 year old self-employed, world famous Forensic Entomologist. Gwen has a double bachelor’s in Biology and Chemistry and Master’s in Entomology (whew!). She is crazy good at what she does and is highly commited to her profession.
So commited in fact, that emotional commitment is always turned away from her door.
Now what would happen when two emotionally unavailable people like Wes and Gwen meet?
Banking on our vast knowledge of every romantic movie, tv show and book we can all probably reach the same conclusion…..
How would Wes and Gwen solve this case, made complicated by the fact that more murders have started happening in Berry Springs?
‘The Fog’ is a treat for all fans of crime thriller as everytime you start thinking “Oh this seems pretty straightforward”, it becomes far more complicated. It was an excellent read for me. I am considering reading more of the author’s works.
Former Marine turned ballistics expert, Wesley Cross is known around town for two things, his rugged good-looks and cocky attitude—until he finds his ex-girlfriend lying in a puddle of blood in his basement. The scene screams setup, but the discovery of a rare gem and a puzzling autopsy suggests the murder goes much deeper than that. Wesley will do whatever it takes to clear his name, including calling in a notoriously headstrong—and sexy—scientist.
While most little girls were playing dress up, Gwyneth Reece was digging in the dirt collecting bugs. Now one of the top forensic entomologists in the country, Gwen reluctantly accepts a job from a pushy cowboy and travels to the small, Southern town of Berry Springs. Heavy storms are brewing, and when she’s forced to check into the creepiest hotel she’s ever seen, she instantly regrets her decision to help out the former Marine.
Following up on a tip, Wesley heads to the Half Moon Hotel but quickly realizes his visit was not by chance. The killer lured him there, and suddenly everyone from the uptight bellman to the wealthy couple just passing through town become suspect. Bodies begin to disappear, and Wesley knows the killer will do anything to get to him…. including hurting the woman who’s kept his head spinning since he first laid eyes on her.
